It reminds me of my father who grew up in the peat-producing part of the Dutch province Drenthe. His father leased a peat bog, which was exploited by his sons and himself. My father started working at the age of 13 and always spoke fondly of his early mornings in the misty marshes, where his duty as a young boy was to keep a fire going at all times.

The peat was mainly used for heating houses I think. After World War II people stopped using peat (or turf as we call it) and the exploitation of peat bogs stopped.
